Molecular sieves are synthetic or natural hydrated aluminosilicates (zeolites) with the general chemical formula:

                                                         
                                                                      (M₂M)O·Al₂O₃·xSIO₂·yH₂O

Cations (M′/M): Monovalent (K+, Na+) or divalent (Ca²+, Ba²+) ions that determine pore properties.

Pore Structure: Uniform, size-selective pores (e.g., 3-10 Å) arranged in a crystalline lattice.

Environmental Protection: Adsorbs H2S, SO2, and VOCs from exhaust gases.

5. Handling & Regeneration

Storage: Seal in dry conditions to prevent moisture absorption.

Regeneration: Heat to 250-350°C under inert gas to restore adsorption capacity.

1. Mixed Xylene Separation

Challenge:

Mixed xylene (containing ethylbenzene, p-xylene, m-xylene, o-xylene) is typically sold as low-value solvent

Traditional separation methods (distillation, crystallization) are energy-intensive and inefficient

Molecular Sieve Solution:

Zeolites offer selective adsorption based on molecular size/shape differences

Particularly effective for separating p-xylene (most valuable isomer)
