4A Molecular Sieves: Key Principles
4A molecular sieve is sodium type A alkali metal aluminosilicate. It appears as white spherical or strip-shaped pellets, with a fixed effective pore size of 0.4 nm (4 Angstrom) and a silica-alumina ratio of 2.
Structure & Function
Synthetic aluminosilicates (zeolites) with uniform micropores arranged in a cubic lattice.
Selective adsorption based on molecular size: Smaller molecules enter pores and are trapped, while larger ones are excluded—hence the "sieve" analogy.
Pore Size Classification
Type 3A (3 A), 4A (4 A), 5A (5 A), and 13X (10 A) are common, each targeting specific molecules (e.g., 3A for water, 4A for CO2).
Mechanism
Adsorption occurs via van der Waals forces and electrostatic interactions within pores.
Regenerable by heating (~200–350°C) to release trapped molecules.
Applications
Gas/Liquid Drying: E.g., dehydrating ethanol or natural gas.
Separation: Isomer purification (e.g., separating n-paraffins from branched chains).

Unique Ion Exchange Property
-Strong polar adsorption with priority to water absorption
Its pore channel has strong internal electric polarity. It exhibits far higher selective adsorption capacity for water molecules than other gases, realizing deep drying and reducing the gas dew point below -60℃. It is the most commonly used desiccant for deep dehydration.
-Large adsorption capacity
Under normal temperature and 75% humidity condition, its static water absorption rate can reach more than 22%. It absorbs water rapidly with stable saturated adsorption capacity.
-Excellent thermal stability: It can withstand calcination at up to 700℃. Its structure will not be damaged easily during high-temperature activation and regeneration, and can be recycled hundreds of times.
- Stable chemical property: Insoluble in water and most organic solvents; resistant to weak acid and weak alkali, and performs excellently in neutral environments; non-corrosive to equipment.
- High mechanical strength: The formed pellets feature high compressive strength. They are not easy to break and produce little dust during filling and fluidization, leading to low bed resistance.
It has sodium ion exchange capacity, which can replace calcium and magnesium ions in water. Therefore, it can be used as a softening auxiliary agent for phosphorus-free detergent, and adsorb heavy metal ions such as lead, copper and zinc. It can be regenerated with salt water after saturation.

Polar Cavity: The aluminosilicate framework creates an electrostatic field within pores due to unsatisfied charges (from Al³+ substitution in SiO4 tetrahedra).
Interactions:Polar Molecules (e.g., H2O, CO2, H2S): Bind via hydrogen bonding or dipole-cation attraction (e.g., H2O → K+ in 3A sieves).
Polarizable Molecules (e.g., CO2): Induced dipoles form transient bonds with lattice cations (e.g., Na+ in 13X sieves).
Selectivity: Smaller polar molecules (kinetic diameter ≤ pore size) are preferentially adsorbed over nonpolar ones (e.g., CH4).
2. Role in Desulfurization
Target Molecules:H2S (2.6 Å): Strongly adsorbed due to polarity and small size (fits even in 3A sieves).
COS (3.2 Å): Captured by larger-pore sieves (e.g., 4A or 5A).
